Intellectual Property fundamentals for startups: creating and protecting your key assets

This session aims to drive startups, R&D entities and end-users on a journey of intangible assets creation and protection, through a role-play case departing from the basic roots of an innovative/R&D project until it reaches the market, pinpointing the most relevant steps in the process for securing the competitive advantages of the intangible assets involved.

 

José Ricardo Cotrim Saraiva de Aguilar

Graduated in Law by the Law Faculty of Coimbra University (2000), Post-Graduate in Bank, Insurance and Stock Market Law (2001) and Corporate Law (2003) by the same Faculty.
Relevant skills and competences in legal issues specifically focused in Intellectual Property Law, with continuous work since 2002.
Laywer registered in the Coimbra Bar since 2003 (License no 4911-C, 8th January 2003).
Since the end of 2001 in Instituto Pedro Nunes as Legal Advisor, supporting Instituto Pedro Nunes Board of Directors, IPN Incubadora Executive Board and all incubated companies.
From 2008, part of IPN VCI – Knowledge Valorisation and Commercialization Unit. Within this framework, has current activities in intellectual property law (industrial property law and copyright law), supporting the drafting of technology transfer agreements and other Science / Company documents and agreements.

Additionally, has relevant intervention as trainee and lecturer, both in specific training programs, post- graduate studies and graduate studies.

Since 2011, invited lecturer on the Biomedical Pharmacy Degree of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Coimbra University, co-responsible for the module “Regulatory Affairs and Patents”.
Regular participation in several events on technology transfer and IP matters organized by the most relevant global entities (AUTM, LES, ASTP, ERA, OECD, OMPI, WIPO and EPO).
Since 2018, member of the EPO – European Patent Office Standing Advisory Committee on Patent Information and Documentation.
Since 2019, member of the EUIPO – European Intellectual Property Office Observatory SME Expert Group.
Since 2019, member of the EARTO – European Association of Research and Technology Organizations Legal Experts Working Group.
Since May 2019, Researcher on SPARC – Space Law Research Center, near CEDIS, Law Faculty Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
